4 Tips for Moving Large Furniture

Georgia Shaw

Moving out of your home and you have large furniture items that you're unsure how to safely move? While it is best to hire professional movers, here are some tips that will help you do it on your own.

Lift With Your Forearms

A common mistake that people make is lifting heavy objects with their fingers. It puts too much staring on this fragile part of the body, which makes you sore or can cause an injury. That's why it helps to use forearm moving straps. All of the weight and tension is put on your forearms rather than the fingers, which makes it much easier to lift heavy furniture.

In addition, you only need to lift the furniture off the ground a little. You're sliding these straps under the furniture and lifting upward, so the item only comes off the floor a couple of inches. If you were to lift the item yourself, you'd need to squat down and lift it with your back, which makes it very difficult to put the item up and down safely.

Use Furniture Sliders

There is no need to use your strength to lift heavy items across your entire house. It's a good idea to use furniture sliders to get them to the front door. You can then do the heavy lifting from there to get them out the door and onto the moving truck. Furniture sliders come in a variety of shapes and sizes to meet your needs. There are large sleds that are several feet long, and small pucks that can be put underneath individual legs.

Use An Appliance Dolly

There is a big difference between a utility dolly and an appliance dolly. A utility dolly is good for moving boxes since it has a large base and the item rests against the back of the dolly. An appliance dolly has straps that allow you to secure the appliance to the dolly. You can then balance the item by tilting the dolly back so that the center of the item's weight is directly above the wheels. This will make it much easier to move than lifting the heavy item yourself.

Wrap Items In Plastic Wrap And Furniture Pads

You never know when you are going to run into a corner or have an item rub against something sharp. That's why it helps to protect everything you are moving with plastic wrap and furniture pads. You can use the plastic wrap to secure the furniture pad directly to the item, which will make it a bit easier to maneuver the item around to get it out the door.
