Start Packing Early

If you're in the process of a move, one of the best things you can do is start packing early; the earlier the better. As soon as you have a moving date, start packing the things that you know you won't need. Set aside space in your home – or garage – for the boxes you've packed up. Be sure to label each box so that you know what's inside them. This will help considerably when it comes time to unpack your boxes.

Arrange for Childcare

If you have children, you'll want to arrange for childcare when the time comes to start packing up the whole house. Having someone designated to care for your kids will ensure that you can concentrate on the task at hand. It will also help keep your kids safe from accidents. If childcare isn't available, designate one room in the house as the kid-zone. Set up a movie, give them a snack, and install the child gate so you can get to work.

Pack One Room at a Time

When you're packing for a move, the best thing to do is go room by room. Start at the back of the house and work your way forward. While you're packing up each room, take the time to discard the items you don't want to take with you. Creating a keep pile and a discard pile will prevent you from packing things that you no longer want or need. As you finish packing each room, set the boxes aside and shut the door. Once all the doors are shut, you'll know you're done with the packing.
